Are you the Cause of your world, or the Effect of it?

Think about the question posed in the title of this article. Are you the cause of your world, or the effect of it?  Before you answer, let's delve deeper into what this actually means.

Most of us already know that the way we perceive the world around us is totally unique to each one of us.  It is almost impossible to be 'on the same page' as someone else.

We also discovered that a big part of our individual perception is the filtering process that occurs to help us generalise, delete or distort the available information to help make sense of the world.  This is a critical piece of information that we can use to empower our own Synergistic Wellbeing.  Our beliefs shape the way we see the world, which means that we have the ability to shape our own reality through the things that we believe to be true.

Welcome to the world of Cause and Effect.

Cause = I create my own world = I am in control of my own destiny = awesome more often.

Effect = everything happens to me = victim mentality = awesome less often.

The more you believe that you are the creator of the world around you, and truly believe this, the more awesome (more often) you will feel.   Yes, things happen in life which are out of our control.  Yes, things happen that aren't our fault.  Yes, things happen which we didn't create.  The question is, where is your power?

By choosing to be the cause of the things that happen in your life - and yes it takes a lot of courage to accept that you are the cause of  'everything' in your life - you all of a sudden have many more choices available, including:

  • I choose to do something about it
  • I choose to change the situation
  • I choose not to let it impact me or others around me
  • I choose to create a better world for myself

One of the greatest things about life is that we can make our own choices.  We can be the captain of our own ship. The masters of our domain.  The god and creator of our own universe.  The person we want to be.

Feeling 'more awesome more often' is often about realising that we always have choices, sometimes we just can't see them.  This key idea is summed up perfectly in a poem by Portia Nelson:  Here is a shortened version:

I walked down the street, there was a deep hole, I didn't see it, I fall in. It wasn't my fault.

I walked down the same street, there was a deep hole, I pretended not to see it.  I fall in.  It wasn't my fault.

I walked down the same street, there was a deep hole, I see it.  I still fall in.  It is a habit.  It is my fault.

I walked down the same street, there was a deep hole, I see it, I walk around it.

I walked down a different street.

Where's the hole now?  At any given moment, we have plenty of choices available if we choose to look for them.  Synergistic Wellbeing is a choice.  Which choice are you making?
