Let’s agree that the world doesn’t need yet another article about that Virus. However one thing that the first part of 2020 has reminded us about is just how quickly things can change. Just when exciting plans are in place, BOOM, the plans are all of a sudden useless. Life is full of twists and turns.
Let’s agree that it is an emotionally difficult time for many people, and unfortunately this has led to an explosion of health and wellbeing tips and advice on the internet. There are immune-boosting suggestions, magic elixir’s, resilience tips and stress-busting meditations. Our advice is to be really careful and do your homework before investing too much time or money into any of these. There are many who are simply looking to make a quick dollar or two.
For example, let’s take a look at ‘Immune Boosting’.
The immune system is actually an extremely complex interplay of various systems and processes. Whilst the effectiveness of our immune system can increase and decrease, the goal isn’t necessarily to boost your immune system. Why? It’s major role is to fight off enemies that don’t belong in the body, which helps us maintain a natural state of health. It’s a remarkable feature of our human existence considering that none of us are consciously controlling our immune system, it all happens by itself! However if we had an over-active immune system, it might start to kill off other things instead of just focusing on the baddies. In other words, boosting the immune system is not really the point, it’s about making sure it is balanced and functioning properly. Whilst ‘immune boosting’ is an easy phrase to understand, beware of those who don’t know what they are talking about.
The same goes for resilience programs. We have seen an explosion of ‘look on the bright side of life’ programs that are well-intentioned but can sometimes create unwanted side effects. At The Juicy Effect, we are often referred customers who have ended up in a worse position because they have been trying to increase resilience and end up falling in a heap through poor advice. Just be mindful about what you are signing up to.
